Hello & Insurance + Propane Question

Howdy,
It was recommended that I post this question to you all right here on this tribe.
Curious if anyone out there knows of an insurance policy that covers propane-based open-flame fire sculptures (no accumulator, just straight flow with regulators/shut-offs) in public spaces. I don't think COTUS covers this. We are going legit with the flame and may need some back-up. One-time or yearly policies welcome. Any leads would be much appreciated, even/especially ones that tell me that I don't need insurance for that kind of thing.
Peace,
Denise Denise

repairing a rusted-out motorcycle gas tank

(x-posted to DiY)

I have an old motorcycle gas tank that's in need of serious repair. It's a saddle-type tank, where the frame top-tube divides the tank in half, with a separate fuel tap on each bottom. (Thankfully, the areas around the fuel taps are sound.) Most of the bottom of each half is rusted out, and there are small rust-holes going up one side about 1/3 of the way. I'll be painting the tank, once it's repaired.

I know -- the first response from people is "get a new one", but this is an extremely rare bike, and after 6 months of serious searching, I have not been able to locate another gas tank anywhere in the world. So replacement isn't an option. My budget is low, so having it professionally restored isn't an option either. That leaves repairing it myself. Most of the bike's restoration, I'll be tackling myself and, having restored (to at least a decent amateur standard) a dozen or so bikes over the years, I'm pretty confident about doing whatever is necessary. However, I've never done rust-patching where it would be visible AND where it would have to safely contain gasoline. That's why I'm asking here.

The options that I know of are forming steel to the right contour and wire-welding or brazing it in place, and then doing any necessary filling with lead, brass or 2-part filler. I don't have a wire-welding rig, so that's going to make it more complicated, although I'm considering buying a flux-core (gasless) welding rig. Or, I could buy a brazing torch rig and go that route. I've done acetylene welding in the past, but never wire welding or brazing, although I'd like to learn and think I could pick either one up pretty quickly.

Are there other options I don't know about? Is there any way to use say, fiberglass or aramid-reinforced resin that will be able to patch a bike's gas tank? Some new miracle material or process?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

But we're making progress.

Check this link with video of Nancy Nadel and me speaking about it in Council Chambers on Tuesday.

www.abetteroakland.com/nancy-...8-03-06

I'm now negotiating with Nancy to find a solution. I still need support at the next committee meeting on this topic.

Please come to this:
March 11, Tuesday, 3:30PM, City Hall-Hearing Room One, First Floor
This one is important, but it's in the middle of the day. I need as many people as I can get. Get there early, at 3. I'll do a Q and A, and a little strategy talk before we go in.

I'm looking for artists and craftspeople to come tell their stories about live/work spaces, and converting industrial spaces. If you have a lease on an illegal space, please bring a copy. We can black out your address and use the lease as evidence that residential leases are being handed out illegally. That will show the City that we're not to blame and can't be held responsible because we've been lied to about our spaces in many instances. If you have landlord horror stories, bring them too. And bring good stories about what goes right when 6 or 8 people move into an old building and create an incubator for thought, craft, art, beauty and friendship.

If enough people show up, we'll be able to do very good things for the Live/Work community.

Email me with questions. Or come to the Art Murmur tomorrow and talk to me. I'll be easy to spot.

Call for art: Wearable Art at Exploratorium

Dear Arts Community,

I am curating a show at the Exploratorium which is scheduled to open on April 25, 2008. This one night event will feature the best of wearable art and wearable computing. The opening is an extravaganza and include performances, a runway, and installations. As a more lasting sculptural adventure, we will be asking artists if they would be willing to contribute works that will hang on clotheslines through out the rafters of the Exploratorium’s cavernous warehouse space for a period of about three months.

If you have something that you would like to contribute to the evening or to the clothesline, please send me some information about it. If you can, give me some indication of what it would cost to get it to San Francisco as well.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you might have. Also, feel free to send this email on to qualified individuals who you think are doing interesting work in this field.
Live/Work is Under Threat in Oakland!

Hello Oakland Arts Community.

I'm sending this out to all of you in hopes that you'll read it and pass it along. The city of Oakland is considering a measure that will hurt us if passed by banning all live/work that is not already 100% legal. Any of you who are in such space thus become far more vulnerable, and the creation of any such space will be stopped dead in its tracks.

I hope to spread the word and bring about some grass roots support at Planning Commission and City Council meetings. The last time I spoke at one of these meetings, I was the sole representative of the work/live community. I hope that at the next meeting there will be many more of us. Thus far the discussion has been dominated by either industrial property owners who are concerned about complaints from live/work users, or speculative residential developers who generally aren't interested in serving artists. This coming meeting is at City Hall on February 13th, at 7pm.

__________

Here is the issue, summarized as quickly as I can manage:

Oakland is redefining what is permitted in its industrial zones. Under the proposed new rules, up to 80% of the area that once allowed
work/live use will be lost. The motivation for the new rules seems to come from a couple of different concerns. First, industrial land owners and businesses feel threatened by the recent explosion in faux live/work condos in industrial areas. Industry is worried that the people in these developments will complain about noise, pollution and traffic, and make it difficult to do business in Oakland. Second, Oakland has been losing manufacturing and industrial jobs.

The city zoning staff and the industrial community seem to believe that they can improve their situation by banning all residence within
these industrial zones. What they have failed to realize is that legitimate work/live artists, craftspeople and tradesmen are not a
part of their problem. Our hybrid way of life is real, and most of us are just as engaged in high-impact activities as the industrial
community is. The proposal that is on the table needs to be changed to allow legitimate work/live to continue. We can't let them throw the baby out with the bath water (and us with it) by lumping all forms of live/work and live/work together and banning it altogether.

__________

Again, the next meeting on this topic at City Hall is on Wednesday, February 13th at 7pm. This process is quite far along, so there is an urgent need to mobilize and show that we have not been included the consideration of in this imminent, misguided action. It would be great if there was a place where we could meet beforehand to discuss a unified strategy for presenting at the meeting and for actions, so if any of you can host, I would greatly appreciate it. Otherwise, please just show up. The sooner we make ourselves heard, the sooner we can get results. The consequences for our community are serious if we don't turn this around.

Thanks,

Max Allstadt

custom jail cell door

Hi all, I am looking for someone who can build me a jail cell door in stainless steel. We'll work out exact details later, but I'm talking about something about six feet high, about 32" wide. Similar in style to this:

http://image.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Travel/Pix/pictures/2007/08/23/Prisondoor460.jpg (but with no locking mechanism)

We'll need to mount it on hinges of some type as well. We're looking for that massive, heavy, solid door feeling.

If you're interested, please let me know and give me an idea of your cost of materials, labor and rough timeline.

Thanks, Steve.

Fly into BRC spaceport for Burning Man!

Arrive in style and speed to Burning Man, by way of Black Rock City Spaceport! Ya thats right, flying straight into BRC is one of the most spectacular ways to penetrate the playa. I have room on a small private plane to arrive at the BRC spaceport Wednesday evening. Im leaving from Salinas around 3 or 4pm. So this is open to anyone in the the flight path from Salinas to Black Rock City. This includes San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, ect.
This flight take less than a couple of hours, so you arrive refreshed and ready to party! No drive hangover, or highway zombie syndrome!
This is carry-on luggage flight only, so you must arrange for some one to transport your gear and bikes ahead of time.
The more people to fly the cheaper it is, but limited seating. And not as expensive as you think!
PM me for pricing. Good luck, and see you on the playa!

The funniest thing heard at Fire Arts Festival

I went to the Fire Arts Festival on Friday night and couldn’t help but overhear a small group of people, first time attendees I dare speculate, making plans for the evening. Then I heard their leader say something that I simply could not help but to break down laughing.

“OK, if we get separated we’ll meet over by the thing that’s on fire.”

Anyone else have quote from the event they wish to share?

Kinetic Steam Works will host dynamic demonstrations of steam power with a collection of repurposed vintage equipment driving interactive sculptures just days before their appearance at the Coachella festival in the Palm Springs desert.
An Auxiliary boiler, assorted mill engines, and a 1920 Case traction engine are the force behind a collection of awe-inspiring and personally engaging sculptures including a hand fabricated working carousel by Jamie Vaida, brass instruments plumbed with falling water and rising steam by Stephen Rademaker, a towering 22’ tall fire and waterfall by Orion Fredrick, and a live performance by spygirl and Sean Orlando. “The Dingus Smashing Show” uses a 1920’s ironworker to crush anything placed between its gears, a gross example of juvenile delinquency at it’s most entertaining.
The Pre Coachella Steam-up happens Saturday, April 21st at NIMBY warehouse, 1649 28th street Oakland.

See Belva Be Legal!!!

I, Mystress Fyre, started the Fire Arts Program at the Crucible three and a half years ago. Thanks to Michael Sturtz I was able to return this past year and teach via a work visa! My visa is almost up (end of June) and I don't want to go back to Vancouver. SO I'm having a party in hopes of raising enough money to assist in my Immigration Lawyer fees as it's a costly affair!

Please read below for all the pertinent deets...it's gonna be a GOOD time!!! Come out, play and support your favourite Canadian!!

adies n gents, family of friends, my community extraordinaire!!!

.....it's that time of year again for our Favorite Canadian...the time of year when she realizes that her visa is almost up (well almost...end of June) and she doesn't ever want to leave SF so she needs another Visa...which means another "See Belva" PARTY!!!! The "See Belva" series is being re-instated this year.

In the past we've had :
See Belva Run (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society)
See Belva Ride (AIDS Ride)
See Belva Go
See Belva Come Back
See Belva Go
See Belva Come Back
and finally
See Belva Be Legal so she doesn't have to keep coming and freaking going!

So I'm having a fundraiser for my Immigration Fee's---it's a costly affair to say the least! My goal is to raise $3000!!!

*See flyer attached ---- Jay Kravitz ROCKS!*

Saturday March 3rd we're throwing it down at the Xenodrome!!
Doors open at 8pm
Show at 10-ish
$15 Donation at the door

~Rockstar Bartenders will be filling up your cups all night long!
~We'll have kicking funky beats supplied by Point Arena's one and only Selector Science!!
~Members of Xeno will be sharing their amazing art::: Ti on Tissue, J9 on Trapeze, and Danielle with her amazing Fire Umbrella!
~Copper Lantern will be bringing their inspiring posse of Fire Performer's that's sure to dazzle and amaze!!!
~Kristina Canizares will be moving and grooving her body in scintillating ways that only she can!!
~Glasalva will be performing with her Wine Glass Organ---how freaking COOL is that?!
~I will be showcasing a new little Fire Clown piece---not your typical clown piece .... it'll be interesting!
~And finally Mark Growden has generously accepted to come and perform! HOORAY!

There will also be a Raffle with some truly stellar prizes! Acupuncture sessions, Yoga lessons, a Multi Pass to Kinky Salon, an I-Pod Shuffle, One Hour Photo Session and MORE MORE MORE!!!!

This is a rockstar line up of folks...all of whom I'm honoured to call my friends! Gosh. I'm the luckiest woman in the world!!!

All proceeds will go towards my hiring an Immigration Lawyer to help me thru this. If you can't make it in person (I know there's a lotta stuff happening) but still want to donate to the cause feel welcome to send donations via paypal to mystressfyre@canada.com (It's connected to my American account)
.

I sincerely hope that you will all join me on Saturday March 3rd!!

Call For Makers!

Dear Makers,

We are pleased to announce Bay Area Maker Faire 2007!

Organized by the staff of MAKE and CRAFT magazines, Maker Faire is a newfangled fair that brings together science, art, craft an engineering in a fun, energized, and exciting public forum. The aim is to inspire people of all ages to roll up their sleeves and become makers. This family-friendly event showcases the amazing work of all kinds of makers--anyone who is embracing DIY and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience. Last year, we had 20,000 people at Maker Faire.

Maker Faire Bay Area will take place May 19-20, 2007 at the San Mateo Fairgrounds. We are also adding Maker Faire Austin for October 20-21, 2007 at the Travis County Fairgrounds. This call is primarily for Maker Faire Bay Area but you can indicate if you are interested in participating in Maker Faire Austin.

We encourage you to join the fun and propose a maker exhibit, performance or workshop. You can submit a proposal through the web using the link described below or you can come show us your work at a Maker Faire "audition" on Saturday, February 24 at TechShop in Menlo Park, CA.

http://www.makerfaire.com

Proposals: We invite proposals for Maker workbench exhibits, workshops, presentations and performances for the Maker Faire. We are interested in proposals from individuals as well as from groups such as hobbyist clubs and schools.

Maker Workbench: Our standard setup for Makers is a six-foot long workbench. You can use this workbench to display your work and/or demonstrate how you make something. Some makers don't need workbenches, typically because they have a large object or they set up outside. Please provide a short description of what you make and what you will bring to Maker Faire. Please link to photographs or videos of what you make. Let us know about any requirements you have, such as electricity, Internet, ventilation, etc.

Interactive Performance: We're seeking performances that will engage and entertain the attendees and enable them to interact in a fun way. The performances may be tied to a stage or roving through the fairgrounds as a kind of street theatre. Performances could be musical or theatrical, but they could also be a collaborative building process. For example, you might work with attendees to put something large together in an hour.

Presentation: These includes audio-visual presentations intended for showing a project (or process) that cannot be brought to the faire, or a special project that requires AV resources. These presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Please describe the topic of your presentation and what kind of media (audio/video) that you will have. As a general rule, PowerPoint presentations are not appropriate for this event unless they are unusually entertaining.

Demonstration Workshop: A demonstration workshop is a show-and-tell session on how to make something. We're looking for makers who can demonstrate (and teach) particular skills, techniques or processes. You should start off by explaining your materials and tools and then step-through a build process, sharing your knowledge and interacting with the audience. Sessions should be under 30 minutes in length and may be repeated on the program. Please describe the subject of your workshop and what kind of setup you need for it.

Application Form: Please go to the following URL and fill it out to apply for participation as a maker. http://makerfaire.com/bayarea/2007/proposal/

All proposals will be reviewed and we will notify makers of acceptance via email by March 19, 2007.

NOTE: Presenters whose talks are accepted will receive free registration to Maker Faire. We cannot pay for travel and accommodations. (We do make exceptions under some circumstances.) If you have any questions about participating in Maker Faire, please contact Natalie Villalobos by email: info@makerfaire.com. Please let Natalie know if you plan to come to the audition at TechShop.

Key Points:

* Maker Proposal Due: Midnight (PST): Feb. 27, 2007
* Maker Faire Bay Area Audition: Saturday Feb. 24, 2007

Fabulous save on the opening night Fire Ballet sprinkler fiasco! I was amazed at how quickly everyone was able to clean things up and pull it together so the show could go on. It was equally as amazing how the audience stuck it out thorugh the delay. It was so very worth it. I am very impressed! Good job everyone! I'm glad no one REALLY broke a leg.

Kudos to everyone who put the show on. It was absolutely beautiful.

help with a quick metal cutting project

Hi, i'm working on a halloween costume and need to cut out one basic shape from some kind of scrap metal. the basic idea is i'm making a halberd (axehead on a pole) and just need to cut out the shape. i can rivet it to a closet pole myself, but don't have any metal cutting tools. I have some basic tools for polishing and smoothing down the edges, but extra help is always appreciated. I can offer a free lunch and much graditude as compensation.

Furniture wood shop assistant needed Part-time

If you have good wood shop experience and the interest to make furniture. We may be able to work together. You definately have to have great safety skills working in a shop environment. Requirements are measuring things accurately, not be sensitive to dust, noise or power tools. My studio is a fairly relaxed and creative small space. To start you will be part-time and could posibly work more if jobs permit. Your pay will be based on your experience. Please have some examples of experience, references or ability to show that you have worked with wood or made furniture. You will be using saws, hammers, painting, sweeping, lifting. I will hire guys or gals. You can start immediatley after short interview. I will need someone for 6 months to a year, could be longer. I need honest, hard working, reliable help. Thanks.

OMG!!! THEY CHANGED THE STRAT TIME OF THE POWER TOOL DRAG RACES!!!

OMG!!! They changed the Start time Of THE POWER TOOL DRAG RACES. It's a good thing REDNECKS get up EARLY and stuff.....

Okay Racers, it's that time again.

Congratulations on having the good taste to once more subject
yourselves to personal injury, potential humilation, public intoxication and severe
sunburn.

Oh yeah and the drive to succeed and be the best racer you can be all
that yadda yadda.

You are receiving this because YOU are one of the LUCKY FEW who will be
racing at the Power Tool Drag Races This Sunday, May 7th. Yes, it really is
this sunday, yes, this sunday is the 7th, I'll give you a minute to check
your calendars. . .

Okay, we good? Excellent.

Here are a few thing you need to know (pay attention, our options have
changed):

BECAUSE we have gotten such a stunning turnout for the races this year,
and BECAUSE due to extreme laziness on the part of the organizers we're
only having one day of racing, We would ask ALL BUILDERS to be ON SITE at

9:30am

Yes my friends you read me right, racers muct be AT THE JUNKYARD AT

9:30am.

If you don't have at least a representative group of your team there
with the machines, you will definitely make the baby Jesus cry, and worse, send
Bill the Junkman into an awful sulk.

This is so we can at least make a feeble attempt to get through all the
races. It'll be close and we'll probably end in the dark, but wonder of
wonders, we'll have light for a change, plus someone somewhere will probably find something to burn.

Ideally, we will begin racing a little after ten am, so we'll be
underway by the time we have an audience at noonish, maybe earlier. YES, the track will be set
up and good to go. Thanks Charlie and his crew for that, yay Charlie.

"But Gal Friday!" you say "How'm I supposed to get in from Sacramento
in time for 9am?" Well my frends, we can certainly make arrangement sof some
kind. I have couches. Let us know if it's a huge issue and we can work
something out so's you get there with time to spare, Glory Hallelujah.

Nom there will be no formal TV there this year. We are lean, mean, punk
rock and Sponsored by Delicious Delicious Lagunitas Beer so make sure to
intoxicate yourself well before operating your machinery.

Our Race Offical this year is once more Dave "Judge Dave" Calkins, who
will also be on the big PA telling you when to get your collective kiesters to
the starting line/staging area (did I mention we will in all likelihood
have a formal staging area? Thank Don for that. Yay Don.). He will be also
running the ladders and maintaining the all-important illusion of
professionalism. He can be bought with Pepperidge Farm and offers of massage.

John Hell and Hal Robins round out our announcing roster this year,
with a few potential alternates to sub in. If you know any hardcore gearheads of the female persuasion who can rock the mike, send 'em our way.

We will have pit tables and more electricity than you can shake a
capacitor at.

We will have pit bosses to show you where to go with what.

If you know someone who is fully planning on competing and they are not
on this list, TELL THEM TO REGISTER. Seriously, this is your main source of
information, the email you supply through the registration page. Send
'em to the website (http://www.buildersdb.com), it takes five minutes and will
result in Simone failing to have her traditional moments of despair under the
counter in the junkyard office. This means less yelling for *YOU!*. We love
that when that happens.

So, direct any questions you nearly invariably have to me, Simone, and
I will send em along to the right person. Should you wish to do some
preemptive abuse of the judges, please contact Dave. Should you wish to whine about the earliness of the hour, please contact Charlie. All abuse can be
directed to me, where I shall keep a careful note of your needs and then
immediately forget to bring that particular clipboard on the day.

Thanks a ton, remind me of all the things I forgot. See you at the
races!

Simone
--
Bringing you quality product in the face of crushing indifference.

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY It's RACING RACING RACING!!!

Miss Mary Jane had a BAD crash in testing yesterday. I bent the frame and the front (Tires?). So I had to change it from 4WD to just 2WD but she still runs pretty good. I might have to stop by the Box Shop on Friday morning or so to grind a little and run a bead or two and change a gear ratio for a new motor I just installed. Hopefully someone will be there....

I comming down early on Friday to help you guys out with the track and whatever.

Matt and I mounted some new Gocart RACING tires on the Funny Car The (MATT DAWG EXSPRESS) on Saturday.

Of course we had to break them in and wear off the (high spots). HE HE...

So we strapped it to my (Toyota truck with (it's tires) chocked up real good) and did a 6 minute burn out.

Boy, the New tires get real gummy when hot and they plastered the tailgate of my Truck with Super Gooey Black Chunks of Melted Rubber Happiness.

Of course, I'm not going to clean it off and Stuff.

It kinda looks like a Rabbit had a problem with (exsplosive diarrhea)

Poor little Bunny..... ;)

Six days until RACING RACING RACING at the Junkyard.

Greese up your Tools and Register (you bunch of wanabees).....

Can you high tech POWER TOOL RACERS actually beat a (Berkeley Hippy Chick with a belt sander (with an awesome paint job)) in a semi fair race?

I'll bet you can't, so there and Stuff...

Well heres you chance to prove it....

http://www.powertooldragraces.com/

http://www.buildersdb.com/view_bots.asp?eventid=186

Actually I'm a little worried myself... Some of them Berkeley folks are really fast.. They have been running from The MAN for years and stuff...

Bring it ON...

Build Safe...

Build Mean...

Build Strong...

Cheaper alternatives to the Crucible?

I'd like to brush up on my welding skills before tackling an upcoming project, and the Crucible website was the first place I turned. Unfortunately, their lessons are beyond my budget ($280 for two day's tuition is too damned expensive), so I need to find an alternative, and preferably in San Francisco. Any suggestions?

Creating a big push button momentary circuit....

Am wondering if anyone can help give me direction on building a light-up top push button circuit, but one that is very large, say 2 feet in diameter, and how to find or create button cover for such a button. (Like the kind of button that you are not supposed to touch but glows and tempt you!)

Any help would be appreciated. I have some basic info about simple circuits, but I don't know how to make that scalable for the size I want the button to be. What size should the battery be?

I am also fine with creating this push button as a simulation, where one pushed the button and then someone else maually creates the reaction, should the battery needs and such be difficult. I am hoping to connect the button to create a hazard buzzing sound... ok, that might not be a momentary circuit then... but the goal is to get the BIG button to sound off something like a nuclear warning puslating sound... Again, perhaps all I need to do is create a faux button circuit and then have a reaction from it be manual. This is for performance art, so it just has to look like is makes something happen...

Again, any help would be much appreciated!
Kate

Help Build The Worlds Longest Dragon - BRC 2006

The TriBe is planning another large scale art project for Burning Man 2006, and we'd like to invite you and your friends to be a part of it. In 2006 we are going to break the Guinness Worlds Record for the longest Chinese Festival Dragon! The current record is 1.89 miles, set at the great wall of China. We will attempt to break that record by connecting 530 twenty foot body sections together on the playa.

Made From HULA HOOPS!
Here's the easy part. Each section is made from HULA HOOPS - PVC SPRINKLER PIPE AND BED SHEETS... that's It! There are no special tools or expensive materials required. You can decorate it as much or as little as you want. The fiery and animated head will be created by Burning Man artist Jim Bowers, creator of the Eyes Of Gawd.
So build as little as 10 feet or get your whole camp together - throw a dragon building party weekend - and build a 100 footer!

Check Out The Website

http://www.burningtribe.com/dragon/index.html

Take a look at our step by step online tutorial. Complete with photgraphs tips, tricks and a dash of Burning Man humor. Sign up to build the dragon and subscribe to our burningdragon yahoo groups chat list. The dragon is already over two football fields long and participants are throwing out new ideas and posting their own project snapshots.

NO SPECTATORS! BE THE DRAGON!

Hugs not handshakes,
Jim Bowers

I have a cool idea for a pair of earrings but I'd need to hire someone to make them for me, as I've never seen anything like it anywhere. They'd be silver and spiral in design, so I need someone with experience in shaping this metal (not sure how difficult it is). I have the design....is there anyone out there with the will and experience to make them for me? I'm very open to negotiating a fair price for the materials and labor.
Private message me through tribe, please.
Thanks!

suggestions to newbie on replacing wooden massage chair parts with metal

HI all. Im new to this tribe, and also pretty much totally new to metallurgy. Only experience is a metal shop in school like 29 years ago which i dont remember much about, and a brief exprience about 10 years ago one day at an acquaintances metal shop making some small implement.

What im wanting to do now is replace several parts of a massage chair

(the ergo pro www.stronglite.com/home/sl1...lite.html )

that are made of flimsy glued together, thin plywood with a stronger material like metal.
The specific pieces im going to replace are the chest pad base, shin rest base and face rest base which are all made from flimsy, weak plywood which easily cracks and breaks. Durability is pretty darned important with something like this, where people are relying on a very durable, strong capacity for easily holding all sizes of static and dynamic bodily weight.

Anyone have any suggestions as to what i should know and do to complete this small project? I cant afford long classes and with going to school in marin not alot of time for extra classes. Thinking like a short, personal lesson from an individual with needed materials in their shop or workshop at an affordable price or in barter for massage therapy would be great. I live in el cerrito so somewhere close to here is preferred.

Any suggestion, advice?

Aaron

Seeking advice about setting up a workshop

I am looking at a prospective workshop space that has wooden floors. I want to set up a welding station and, maybe in the future, a plasma cutter, if and when I can afford it. Now I know for a fact that wood and fire don't go well together but at the same time I am sure other people have solved this problem before. Are there any standard solutions out there? Or is it an intractable problem? Any help is appreciated.

Just in time for the Singularity, it's . . .

. . . your very own shipping container shop/studio at the Shipyard. . .

Yes, why wait until 2045 when you can begin your transhuman transformation today?

The denizens of the shipyard are fast at work taunting the Singularity towards us at an exponentially accelerating rate. We've recently completed our fortress of physical infrastructure, mined dark matter for off-grid energy sources sure to outlast the Saudis, and now find ourselves in the final stages of tuning our massive DIY Turing machine- a vast and confounding kinetic megalith built entirely of wood, rusty steel, bobby pins and a swirly glass marbles.

So far we have all the computation and object sensing functions down straight, but the emotive realms continue to be a bit unpredictable. A recent visitor asked Tur (yes, that's what we call him/her), "hey, this Shipyard looks like it might be interesting place to build some stuff. How do I join?". To which the machine defty replied, "Write us an email, tell us what has aroused your interest, what you might do here, and we'll see if we can find a container or two for you and yours". Pretty good, hey?

But a little more to and fro about rent numbers and points of policy soon blew the Turing ruse with a simple, "But can I *really* find what I am looking for here at The Shipyard?" (a question many have asked before, to which many answers have been offered). Tur creaked, and sadly muttered something about the number of discrete objects in the yard, and the difficulty of quantative measurement of anything having to do with the Shipyard. . . A disappointing miss by the wooden megalith, but Darrel Licks continues to engage it nightly in an existential discourse of such BLINGING RIGHT CLARITY and insight that Tur should be carrying on about why Camus was the hopeless shoe-gazer that he was, well before 2045.

Or maybe not. We must admit that PZ Meyers stopped by the other day to tell us we are all full of crap and we're not going to get to any singularity anytime before the cows do. pfffff... what does he know? He just writes a blog . . .
http://pharyngula.org/index/weblog/singularly_silly_singularity/

So, despite the usual naysayers providing asphalt under our wheels, the Shipyard Skunkworks continues in its quest for new Argonauts of Amphibian Fabrication to join in our expedition towards transhumanity. Old pros and enthusiastic newbies alike are encouraged to write or stop by. No reasonable offer accepted. Unreasonable offers often handed a welder and told to get to work. Beer is in the vending machine. And please don't steal money out of the change box.

More info. Largely out of date, at www.TheShipyard.org

Hi there...I was at the FireArts Festival which was even better than last year and I saw Los Seunos Del Fuego do a sexy fire performance. Are they interested in performing at other events and does anyone have any contact info or know how I could reach them?

Borg2 "Meet The Artists" -- Saturday Night

Don't forget ........

BORG2's "Meet The Artists" night is this Saturday, Aug 6, starting at 10 p.m. at Soluna Cafe & Lounge in S.F. ... All of the local Borg2-funded artists have agreed to attend and bring a special representation of their project (uhm, no fire in the restaurant, ok?). This is going to be a very special evening ....

A special reception in honor of our very own visionaries begins at 10 pm, with desserts, hot & cold hors d'oveours, and a change to meet and mingle ...

At 11 pm, we'll loosen up with bossa nova beats and other treats ...

Then at midnight, Ryel K. of Pink Mammoth fame takes the turntables so you can move your feet till 2 a.m. ....

Sugested donations are $10 - $40 ... but come out and tell us your sad story and see how cheap you can get in ...

TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW at www.borg2benefit.com

We're getting promises of good publicity from a bunch of community sources, and little hint of a buzz is developing ... But the restaurant has a finite capacity, and it would be whacked to turn away people who've been committed to this experiment all along ...

While hunting around for something to organize my cluttered workshop, I came across these mobile cabinet/worktables at Sears for $60. Bulk storage underneith, small part holders on the work surface.

Pretty good deal, and it could work for folks with limited space.
